Wig Sizing Guide: How to Measure Your Head & Find the Perfect Fit
Share
Why Wig Sizing Matters More Than You Think
You found the perfect wig - beautiful color, gorgeous style - but when it arrives, it feels loose, slips around, or gives you a headache. Sound familiar? Sizing is the most overlooked part of buying a wig online. Here's everything you need to know to get it right the first time.
How to Measure Your Head for a Wig
You'll need a soft measuring tape (the kind used for sewing). Measure in inches or centimeters.
The 3 Key Measurements
- Circumference: Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your head - starting at your natural hairline at the front, going behind one ear, across the nape of your neck, behind the other ear, and back to the front. This is your most important measurement.
- Front to nape: Measure from your natural hairline at the center of your forehead straight back to the nape of your neck.
- Ear to ear (across the top): Measure from the top of one ear, over the crown of your head, to the top of the other ear.
Standard Wig Cap Sizes
| Size | Circumference | Who It Fits |
|---|---|---|
| Petite | Under 21 inches | Smaller head sizes, some teens |
| Average | 21.5 - 22.5 inches | Most adult women (fits ~95% of buyers) |
| Large | 23 inches+ | Larger head sizes |
All LuxeLocks NYC wigs are Average cap size with adjustable straps - they comfortably fit heads between 21 and 23 inches in circumference.
How the Adjustable Straps Work
Inside every wig, you'll find 2-3 velcro or hook-and-eye straps at the nape area. These let you tighten or loosen the cap by about 1 inch in either direction. This means even if your head is slightly smaller or larger than average, the wig can be adjusted to fit securely.
What If the Wig Still Feels Loose?
A few solutions:
- Wig grip band: A velvet or silicone band worn under the wig that adds friction and prevents slipping - no adhesive needed
- Built-in combs: Many wigs have small combs at the temples and nape - clip these into your natural hair or braids for extra hold
- Tighten the straps further: Make sure you've fully adjusted the straps to their tightest setting before assuming the wig is too large
What If the Wig Feels Tight or Gives You a Headache?
Loosen the straps first. If it's still uncomfortable, wear the wig for shorter periods initially - your scalp adjusts over the first few days of wear. A breathable cotton wig cap underneath also reduces pressure and friction.
